As an artist and a founder of a design company, I’m always looking for inspiration and The Shine Studio blog is testament to this from lots of different sources, including exhibitions, travel and different jobs we’ve worked on in the studio.

However, until relatively recently, I was largely unaware of the wealth of fantastic creative stimulus available through art and design blogs. One of my favourites is Creative Boom  – - launched in 2009 by Katy Cowan, to ‘explore the very best work from the fields of art, crafts, graphic design, illustration and photography’ and they are, says Katy, ‘passionate about championing and providing inspiration to graduates, independents, freelancers, studios and anyone who has a love of creativity’.

Creative Boom Website

A page from Creative Boom's inspirational website

Entries range from the highly practical and brilliantly researched Example 1: to quirky bits of frippery, such as Example 2:

If you sign up for their weekly newsletter, a lovely cocktail of creative snippets drop into your in-box, and Katy has split the site into different sections for Inspiration, Tips, Resources and Interviews. Highly recommended!

Another blog that is definitely worth a visit is Design Milk, founded by the US-based, Jaime Derringer –

The site promises to offer what’s new in art, architecture, interior design, furniture and decor, fashion and technology. Although lots of their pieces are focused on its core subjects in the US, they do have roving contributors who report on happenings and trends around the globe, for example, recently, they featured Clerkenwell Design Week.

Lindsey Edelman - Lighting Designer

Lindsey Edelman, lighting designer, the subject of one of Design Milk’s weekly column, Friday Five

One of my favourite things is their regular column, Friday Five, in which they ask a designer, artist or shop owner to share their five favourite things,  What designer doesn’t love a list… and a little nose around other people’s lives/tastes/recommendations. What’s not to like?!
